Lieutenant Colonel Michelle Bongiovi, a United States Air Force officer and periodontist based at Hurlburt Field, has been arrested following a high-speed traffic stop in Tiger Point, Florida.

The incident took place on 25 February 2025 and ended in a physical confrontation with deputies from the Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office. The arrest was captured on video and is now circulating online.
Background: Who is the driver?
The driver has been identified as Lieutenant Colonel Michelle Bongiovi, aged 59. She serves as a periodontist with the 1st Special Operations Medical Group at Hurlburt Field. Bongiovi holds a senior medical role within the US Air Force, attached to one of its most elite units.
The Traffic Stop
According to the Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office, Bongiovi’s vehicle was initially clocked travelling at 73 miles per hour in a 55-mph zone along Highway 98. A deputy gave chase and reportedly reached speeds above 80 mph to catch up. The vehicle continued through a construction zone where the speed limit had dropped to 40 mph before eventually pulling over near Tiger Point Park.
The deputy reported that Bongiovi cracked her window slightly but refused to provide her driver’s licence or vehicle registration. She repeatedly asked to speak to a supervisor and declined to exit the vehicle when ordered. After multiple warnings, the deputy broke the window using a baton, unlocked the door, and forcibly removed her from the SUV before placing her under arrest.
Arrest and Charges
Bongiovi was taken to Santa Rosa County Jail and held under a military hold before being released the following day. The arresting deputy noted that she had watery eyes, dilated pupils, and made unusual statements, leading to concerns she may have been under the influence.
She is currently facing the following charges:
- Driving Under the Influence (DUI)
- Resisting an Officer Without Violence
- Failure to Obey a Lawful Order
- Refusal to Accept a Citation
The Incident on Video
The arrest was captured on bodycam and published on YouTube. The footage shows the confrontation in full, including the moment deputies smash the driver’s window and remove Bongiovi from the vehicle as she struggles.

Online reaction has been divided, with some defending the deputies’ actions as appropriate and others criticising the level of force used.
Air Force Response
A spokesperson from the 1st Special Operations Wing confirmed the arrest and issued a short statement:
“We are aware of the arrest involving Lt. Col. Bongiovi. The Air Force holds all personnel to the highest standards of conduct and does not tolerate illegal activity. We are cooperating fully with local law enforcement.”
No further information has been provided about whether Bongiovi remains on active duty or if an internal investigation is underway.
What Happens Next?
Bongiovi’s case is expected to proceed through the Santa Rosa County court system. No trial date has yet been announced. In addition to possible legal consequences, she could face disciplinary action under the Uniform Code of Military Justice.
Her status as a licensed medical professional could also come under review depending on the case outcome.
The arrest of a senior military medical officer has raised questions around accountability, police conduct, and the consequences of impaired driving. As the case unfolds, both civilian and military systems will determine what penalties, if any, Bongiovi will face.
For now, the video of the arrest has become the focal point of public debate, and the outcome of the case will likely draw continued attention from both the military community and the wider public.
