Brazil’s Supreme Federal Court has ordered federal police to investigate possible foreign interference in the country’s presidential election, including alleged connections between Flávio Bolsonaro’s campaign and a US donor network co-founded by Vice President JD Vance.

Justice Flávio Dino issued the order on Tuesday 27 October 2026, two days after President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva defeated Bolsonaro in the presidential run-off. The inquiry will examine possible overseas funding, campaign assistance and manipulation of online platforms.
The network at the centre of part of the inquiry is Rockbridge Network, which Vance co-founded in 2019. Technology investor Peter Thiel has been identified as a financial backer. Neither Vance nor Thiel has been shown to be personally accused of a crime or individually placed under investigation by the order.
What investigators have been asked to establish
According to the Supreme Federal Court’s official announcement, police must examine whether foreign resources or services were used to support candidates and whether digital platforms were deliberately manipulated to favour or disadvantage campaigns.
Brazilian newspaper Folha de S.Paulo reported that investigators are examining alleged links to Rockbridge through Brazilian business figures Tallis Gomes and Pedro Sang. The investigation also covers paid election-related content allegedly distributed by accounts based overseas, including who funded it and whether the campaign knew about it.
Justice Dino raised a further question about whether any potential political support was linked to overseas economic interests in Brazil’s rare-earth elements and other critical minerals. That is an issue for investigation, not an established finding.
What is Rockbridge Network, and how are Vance and Thiel connected?
Rockbridge is a US conservative donor organisation co-founded by JD Vance and Chris Buskirk in 2019. Reuters reported in August 2024 that Vance no longer had a formal position in the organisation but retained informal ties.
Reuters also identified Peter Thiel as one of Rockbridge’s financial backers. That documented association does not establish that Thiel funded any activity in Brazil. The claim circulating on social media that he is Rockbridge’s largest donor has not been independently substantiated.
Rockbridge and Bolsonaro campaign responses
Rockbridge has denied involvement in Brazil’s election. According to The Washington Post, the organisation said Brazilians purporting to represent it had misrepresented their affiliations and produced unauthorised documents.
Folha reported that Tallis Gomes denied working for Rockbridge or Bolsonaro’s campaign, raising election funds or donating to candidates. Bolsonaro’s campaign has previously said it received no foreign funds or campaign infrastructure, and declined to comment on Dino’s latest ruling.
What has been established, and what remains unknown?
- Confirmed: Justice Dino has ordered a federal police investigation into possible foreign electoral interference.
- Confirmed: Vance co-founded Rockbridge and Thiel has been publicly identified as a backer.
- Unproven: That Rockbridge supplied prohibited funding, staff or services to Bolsonaro’s campaign.
- Not established: That Vance or Thiel personally directed, funded or participated in improper activities connected to Brazil’s election.
The court explicitly stressed that the information presented justified investigating the allegations but did not, on its own, demonstrate that any crime had occurred.
Election result and misleading social media claims
Lula won the 25 October run-off against Flávio Bolsonaro. Brazil’s Senate reported that Lula secured approximately 64.2 million votes, compared with 59.8 million for Bolsonaro. Lula’s new presidential term begins on 5 January 2027.
A widely shared post claims that a new Brazilian administration has launched an investigation directly into JD Vance and his donors. That description is inaccurate: the court order was issued under Lula’s existing presidency by a Supreme Court justice, and its scope should not be confused with an accusation of personal misconduct against the American figures associated with Rockbridge.
