A woman and a suspected gunman have died after a shooting at Citibank Center in Brandon, near Tampa, Florida, on Wednesday 4 November 2026. Police say an armed Citibank security guard shot the attacker after he opened fire at the office complex.
Updated 4 November 2026: This report has been revised following a later briefing by the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office. Police provided new details about the vehicle, the fatal shooting, the security guard’s response and four other people taken to hospital.
The sheriff’s office initially described the attack as apparently targeted. Investigators have not publicly established a motive or said whether the gunman knew the woman who was killed.
What police say happened
According to FOX 13 Tampa Bay’s account of a briefing by Chief Deputy Frank Losat, emergency calls began at about 12.11pm local time. The first marked deputy reached the scene within a minute.
Losat said a man driving a small four-door car crossed grass and road medians, then broke through a secure perimeter fence into an outdoor dining area at the Citibank office campus.
Investigators said the driver got out carrying a rifle, approached a woman who was eating lunch outside and shot her. She died. The gunman then moved towards the building’s cafeteria.
At about 12.15pm, an armed Citibank security guard confronted the gunman and exchanged fire with him, police said. The attacker was wounded, taken to Tampa General Hospital and pronounced dead.
Four other people taken to hospital
Police said four additional people were taken to hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening. It had not been established publicly how they were hurt, including whether their injuries were caused by gunfire or during the evacuation.
Police response and evacuation
The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office deployed 367 deputies, alongside specialist teams and emergency crews. Losat said officers spent about two and a half hours searching and clearing multiple three-storey buildings. Around 3,200 Citibank workers were on the premises when the shooting began.
Losat credited the security guard with stopping the attack and preventing the possibility of further violence. Employees were directed to reunification arrangements at the nearby Staybridge Suites Tampa East. Citigroup said it was cooperating with investigators.
Witness accounts
In earlier reporting from 10 Tampa Bay, witnesses described a car striking the perimeter and people fleeing after hearing shots near the cafeteria. The later police account clarified that the vehicle breached a secured fence into an outdoor dining area, rather than establishing that it had driven through the office building itself.
What we still don’t know
- The names of the woman who died and the deceased gunman.
- Whether they knew each other and the motive for the shooting.
- How the four other people admitted to hospital were injured.
Sheriff Chad Chronister described the attack as believed to be targeted in an initial statement, but that assessment remains preliminary. Police have not announced a confirmed motive.
