Fleetwood Town knocked Premier League champions Arsenal out of the Carabao Cup on Tuesday 27 October, winning 5–3 on penalties after a 1–1 draw at Highbury Stadium.
The League Two club, 84 places below Arsenal in the English football pyramid according to the English Football League (EFL), reached the competition’s quarter-finals for the first time in their history. It was a remarkable result for a side battling near the bottom of the fourth tier.
How Fleetwood knocked out Arsenal
Aaron Loupalo-Bi gave Fleetwood the lead in the 21st minute, holding off defender Marli Salmon before finishing past goalkeeper Illan Meslier. Arsenal equalised five minutes after half-time when Viktor Gyökeres turned the ball home from close range.
Arsenal dominated possession and created chances, but Kai Havertz and Myles Lewis-Skelly were unable to convert opportunities. Fleetwood goalkeeper Jay Lynch produced two important late saves from Ben White and Martin Ødegaard to keep the scores level.
Arsenal’s 16-year-old Max Dowman received a straight red card in the 85th minute after reacting to a challenge by Fleetwood’s Harrison Neal. Arsenal subsequently began an appeal against his dismissal, according to Sky Sports. The outcome of that appeal was not confirmed at the time of writing.
In the shootout, Lynch saved Bruno Guimarães’ penalty before Fleetwood defender Conor Haughey scored the decisive kick to seal a 5–3 victory.
Drone forces early interruption
Play had barely begun when referee Michael Salisbury stopped the match after an unauthorised drone was spotted above the stadium. The interruption lasted roughly eight minutes while match officials and safety staff dealt with the situation.
Sky Sports reported during its coverage that police had located the drone operator. However, no confirmed arrest or charge has been established from the available reporting, so the identity of the operator and any subsequent action remain unclear.
Fleetwood’s manager reflects on historic night
Fleetwood manager Matt Lawlor said his players had not rehearsed penalties before the match, telling Sky Sports: “We haven’t practised once.” He praised the players for managing a difficult night against the champions and urged them to enjoy the occasion before returning to league football.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta congratulated Fleetwood but said his team had failed to take enough of its opportunities. He defended his players’ effort while acknowledging that possession and chances must be turned into goals.
Who will Fleetwood face next?
The quarter-final draw on Wednesday 28 October paired Fleetwood with a home tie against either Everton or Newcastle United. Those Premier League clubs are due to meet on Thursday 29 October, with the quarter-final scheduled for the week beginning 14 December.
Fleetwood’s achievement gives the club another chance to welcome top-flight opposition to their Highbury ground.
