Film director Michael Mann, 83, was taken to hospital after accidentally shooting himself in the leg at a Los Angeles gun range on Saturday, 31 October 2026. His representative said the injury was superficial.

What happened at the gun range?
The director of Heat and Collateral was practising at a sanctioned shooting range in West Los Angeles when a handgun discharged while holstered, according to his representative.
ABC News, citing law enforcement sources, reported that Mann was holstering a .45-calibre handgun when it fired, striking his left thigh. The broadcaster said the incident occurred at a members-only indoor range.
Los Angeles Police Department officers responded to a report of shots fired in the Missouri Avenue area at around 4pm local time. Police said the incident was accidental, and Mann was taken to a hospital in stable condition.
What has Michael Mann’s representative said?
In a statement reported by the Associated Press and other outlets on Sunday, 1 November, Mann’s representative said the weapon had discharged while holstered, resulting in a “superficial injury”. He had been treated and “is being released”, the statement said.
That wording does not independently establish the exact time of his discharge from hospital. No more serious injury has been reported by the authorities or his representative.
Director of Heat and Collateral
Mann is known for meticulous filmmaking and realistic action sequences, including the celebrated bank robbery shootout in his 1995 crime drama Heat, starring Al Pacino and Robert De Niro.
His other films include Thief, The Insider, Ali, Collateral and Ferrari. The director is developing Heat 2, with filming reportedly expected to begin in 2027.
