The Hollywood actress has pleaded not guilty to assault charges following a disturbance aboard a Delta Air Lines flight. Her lawyers cite a medical emergency, while a similar incident in 2016 has returned to public attention.

Hollywood actress Selma Blair, 54, has been arrested following an alleged disturbance aboard a Delta Air Lines flight from Los Angeles to New York on Sunday, 11 October 2026. Two flight attendants reported injuries, while Blair subsequently faced two assault charges involving a police officer and a hospital nurse. She pleaded not guilty during a court appearance on Monday, with her legal team maintaining that her actions resulted from a medical emergency.

What Happened Aboard the Delta Flight?

Blair was travelling on Delta Air Lines Flight 938 from Los Angeles International Airport to New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport when an incident involving cabin crew prompted a request for police and medical assistance.

According to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, officers responded at approximately 11pm on Sunday after receiving reports of a physically abusive passenger.

Two flight attendants reported injuries, with one requiring hospital evaluation.

Media reports, citing law enforcement sources, allege that Blair punched one flight attendant, bit another and attempted to open an aircraft door. The precise circumstances of these allegations have not been publicly established through an official account of the incident.

In air traffic control communications reported by the Associated Press, the aircraft’s pilot requested medical assistance for injuries described as including a bloody nose and bite marks.

The pilot also indicated that the disruptive passenger may have struck her head against part of the aircraft interior.

When the flight arrived at JFK, Blair was detained by police and taken to hospital for medical assessment.

Alleged Assaults on Police Officer and Nurse

The incident did not end when the aircraft landed.

According to criminal court documents reported by People magazine, Blair allegedly became physically aggressive while officers were arranging her transfer for medical treatment.

Port Authority Police Officer Maria Suarez alleged that Blair removed a leg from the straps securing her to a stretcher and repeatedly kicked her around the face, neck and chest.

The officer reported swelling to her jaw and substantial pain.

A second allegation concerns an incident at Jamaica Hospital Medical Center in Queens during the early hours of Monday, 12 October.

A registered nurse alleged that Blair kicked her in the chest while staff were helping transport the actress for further treatment.

The nurse reported substantial chest pain and was subsequently granted an order of protection.

Blair was charged with two counts of second-degree assault under New York state law.

These are allegations contained in court documents, not findings of guilt.

Blair Pleads Not Guilty as Lawyers Cite Medical Emergency

Blair appeared before Queens Criminal Court on Monday evening, where she pleaded not guilty to both state assault charges.

Judge Indira Khan set bail at $20,000 in cash or $60,000 in bond. Blair was subsequently released.

Her attorney, Shawn Barnes, disputed suggestions that she had deliberately attacked anyone.

“This was not an intentional assault,” Barnes told the court, according to contemporary reports.

Her legal team said Blair had missed several doses of medication prescribed to control severe neurological symptoms.

They also cited an exhausting work schedule before the flight and an incident aboard the aircraft in which she reportedly struck her head.

Barnes argued that these circumstances, combined with the altitude, resulted in severe confusion and disorientation.

A representative for the actress separately confirmed that she had received medical attention and was in a stable condition.

The medical explanation remains her legal team’s account of events. It has not been independently established as the cause of the alleged assaults.

A Similar Flight Incident in 2016

This is not the first occasion on which Blair has experienced a highly publicised disturbance aboard an aircraft.

On 20 June 2016, the actress was travelling from Cancún, Mexico, to Los Angeles following a family holiday.

During the flight, witnesses reported that she became visibly distressed and made a series of alarming statements.

Two nurses travelling aboard the aircraft reportedly attempted to assist her, while the flight crew arranged for medical personnel to meet the aircraft upon landing.

Blair was subsequently removed from the aircraft on a stretcher and taken to hospital.

The following day, she issued a public apology through Vanity Fair.

In that statement, Blair acknowledged mixing alcohol with medication, explaining:

“I mixed alcohol with medication, and that caused me to black out.”

She expressed deep regret over her behaviour, apologised to the passengers and crew and thanked those who had assisted her.

Her statement concluded: “I am truly very sorry.”

The 2016 episode was extensively reported at the time, but the contemporary accounts primarily describe a medical intervention rather than criminal proceedings.

Crucially, there is no verified evidence that alcohol played any role in the October 2026 incident. The two events should not automatically be attributed to the same cause.

Blair’s Multiple Sclerosis Diagnosis

Blair publicly revealed in 2018 that she had been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS), a chronic condition affecting the central nervous system.

Since then, she has spoken extensively about living with the condition and has become a prominent advocate for disability awareness and accessibility.

Her experiences have included physical difficulties and periods of significant disruption to her health and career.

Her lawyers have connected the latest incident to missed medication and neurological symptoms. However, it would be inappropriate to conclude independently that multiple sclerosis caused the alleged behaviour.

The distinction matters.

A medical condition can be relevant to understanding a person’s actions without establishing what happened in a particular incident or determining legal responsibility.

Similarly, the existence of a medical explanation does not diminish the reported injuries or the concerns of the flight attendants, police officer and nurse involved.

Both the allegations and Blair’s defence deserve to be reported accurately.

Federal Investigation and Possible Penalties

Alongside the New York state proceedings, Blair faces a separate federal allegation relating specifically to the events aboard the aircraft.

According to the Associated Press, the FBI issued a federal assault violation notice following the incident.

The federal matter is expected to be handled through a petty violations court in Brooklyn. No federal hearing date had been announced at the time of reporting.

The two New York state charges concern the alleged assaults on the officer and nurse after the flight.

If convicted of the state charges, Blair could face a substantial prison sentence, with reports citing a potential range of two to seven years. Any eventual sentence would depend on the offences established and the court’s assessment.

Delta Air Lines has reiterated its policy of zero tolerance towards unruly or unlawful behaviour, emphasising passenger and crew safety.

What Happens Next?

Blair is scheduled to return to court on 19 January 2027 in connection with the state assault proceedings.

The federal matter remains separate.

For now, the actress has pleaded not guilty, and no court has determined her guilt.

The case raises questions about the circumstances of the flight disturbance, the injuries allegedly sustained by those involved and the medical explanation advanced by Blair’s representatives.

The earlier incident in 2016 provides relevant background, but does not establish responsibility for what happened a decade later.

Further developments will depend on the evidence presented and the outcome of the ongoing legal proceedings.
