Jansen Dru Trotter, principal of Leonard High School in Texas, has been arrested and charged over an alleged failure to report teacher misconduct after police discovered a recording of concerns raised by a student who later died.

Leonard Police arrested Jansen Dru Trotter, principal of Leonard High School in Fannin County, on Tuesday 27 October 2026. He faces a state jail felony charge of failure to report employee misconduct with intent to conceal. The allegation has not been proved in court.
What police say happened
During an investigation following the death by suicide of a Leonard High School student earlier in October, officers found an audio recording of a conversation between the student and Trotter, according to reporting by local television station FOX 4. Police say the student raised allegations of inappropriate conduct by a schoolteacher involving several female pupils.
Investigator Billy Ivy told FOX 4 that Trotter initially denied being aware of the conversation before police confronted him with the recording. Investigators allege that he knew about the allegations but failed to make the required report.
Police have said they have found no evidence linking the student’s death to the alleged failure to report the misconduct concerns. The circumstances surrounding the death and the allegations remain under investigation. Fish 4 News is not naming the student or the teacher at the centre of the unproven allegations.
The charge and reporting requirements
According to Leonard Police, the charge concerns the Texas Education Code requirement for school principals to notify the district superintendent or relevant director within 48 hours of becoming aware of evidence of specified employee misconduct. Police allege Trotter failed to do so with intent to conceal the information.
The distinction matters: Trotter is not reported to have been charged with committing the underlying alleged misconduct. The criminal case concerns what he allegedly knew and whether he met his legal reporting duty.
Trotter was taken to Fannin County Jail. FOX 4 reported that he appeared before a magistrate on Wednesday 28 October and that bail was set at $5,000. A bail decision is not a finding of guilt.
School district places principal on leave
Leonard Independent School District superintendent Brad Maxwell confirmed that Trotter had been placed on administrative leave after the arrest. The district said it was cooperating with police and could not comment further on an active investigation and a confidential personnel matter.
The district appointed Trotter principal for the 2026–27 academic year. Its public school directory still lists him in that role, but the administrative leave means he is not currently serving in his usual capacity.
What remains unknown
- Whether the allegations concerning the teacher will result in disciplinary action or criminal charges.
- The full contents and circumstances of the student’s recorded conversation with the principal.
- Whether any additional evidence or charges will emerge from the continuing investigation.
- The eventual outcome of the criminal case against Trotter.
The allegations involving the teacher remain unproven. Trotter is presumed innocent unless convicted.
