Elon Musk announced his America Party in July 2025 as an alternative to the US political establishment. More than a year later, its practical existence remains unclear, while Musk is again committing hundreds of millions of dollars to Republican election efforts.

On 5 July 2025, after a public dispute with President Donald Trump over a tax and spending bill, Musk declared on X that the America Party had been formed. He argued that the United States needed a political alternative to its two dominant parties.
What did Musk promise?
Musk had asked his followers on X whether they wanted a new party and cited a favourable result. His suggested strategy was unusually narrow: concentrate on two or three Senate seats and eight to 10 House districts, potentially giving a small group of lawmakers influence over closely divided votes.
But he did not identify the seats, name candidates or publish a detailed programme. Reporting by Axios on 30 July 2025 found no visible progress on an authenticated party registration or candidate operation.
Was the America Party ever established?
Musk’s announcement was real. That does not, by itself, establish that a functioning electoral party followed. Associated Press reporting in July 2025 identified suspicious Federal Election Commission filings using variations of the America Party name. Musk said at least one apparent registration was false and had been reported to the regulator.
The FEC database still contains entries with similar names, including terminated committees. Those records should not be treated as evidence that Musk personally established or controlled them without independent confirmation.
On 19 August 2025, Reuters reported a Wall Street Journal account that Musk was slowing the project and prioritising his businesses and political relationships. Musk publicly challenged the Wall Street Journal’s reliability. He has not, on the evidence reviewed for this article, made a clear announcement formally cancelling the America Party.
Where has Musk’s political money gone?
By October 2026, the clearest measurable political activity was support for Republicans, not the launch of a third-party campaign. In a 12 October report, Reuters said Musk’s spending in the 2026 election cycle totalled about $366 million, including at least $276 million since July 2026 to Republican-aligned organisations and his own political action committee. A spokesman for America PAC confirmed the breakdown.
Reuters identified $158 million for the Republican-aligned Senate Leadership Fund, $20 million for the Congressional Leadership Fund, $76 million for America PAC and additional funding for other Republican-aligned groups.
America Party and America PAC are not the same thing
America PAC predates the proposed America Party. According to the Federal Election Commission, America PAC registered on 22 May 2024 as an independent-expenditure-only political committee, commonly known as a super PAC. It raises and spends money to influence elections; it is not itself a registered political party.
Confusing the two would give a misleading impression that Musk’s 2025 proposal has become an established third-party organisation.
What remains unknown
- Whether Musk intends to revive, reorganise or formally abandon the America Party.
- Whether any genuine party infrastructure or ballot-access effort linked to him exists beyond what has been publicly verified.
- Whether he will eventually put forward candidates campaigning under the America Party name.
As of 28 October 2026, Fish 4 News has found no independently verified evidence of a functioning Musk-led America Party contesting the approaching midterms. That is not the same as proof the project has been permanently cancelled.
The contrast is nevertheless clear: the proposed independent party has not demonstrated a comparable public electoral operation, while Musk’s financial support for the Republican Party is substantial and documented.
