A major fire damaged Hotel Good Luck in Nepal’s Everest region on Friday 30 October, as heavy snowfall disrupted travel along the Everest Base Camp trekking route. Police reported no casualties.

The blaze began at about 11am local time in Dingboche, a high-altitude village in Solukhumbu district. Flames spread through part of the trekking hotel as snow covered the surrounding buildings and tracks. Police said the fire was brought under control in approximately two hours.

What happened at Hotel Good Luck?

Deputy Superintendent of Police Nabin Raja Budhathoki, head of the Solukhumbu District Police Office, said initial information suggested a cooking-gas incident in the hotel kitchen. Some reports described a gas leak or an overturned cylinder; others referred to a possible cylinder explosion. The precise ignition sequence has not been independently established.

Nepalese outlets, including The Kathmandu Post and Nepal News, reported the initial police findings and confirmed that there were no reported deaths or injuries.

Hotel owner Kul Bahadur Tamang told The Tourism Times that all guests and staff had been evacuated safely.

How badly was the hotel damaged?

Reports differ over precisely which buildings were lost. In an account published by Kantipur, police said that a building able to accommodate around 50 people had been damaged, while the hotel’s main building remained safe.

In contrast, The Tourism Times quoted the owner saying the main building of the 17-room hotel had been destroyed. An independent final damage assessment has not been published in the reports reviewed by Fish 4 News.

Trekking guide Arjun Gurung told Everest Chronicle that the presence of cooking-gas cylinders and extensive wooden construction complicated efforts to tackle the blaze. Guides, hotel staff and local residents helped respond.

Snowfall leaves trekkers unable to move

The fire coincided with unusually difficult conditions in the Khumbu region. Everest Chronicle reported that trekkers in Dingboche were unable to continue towards Everest Base Camp or descend because of heavy snowfall.

Dingboche sits at approximately 4,410 metres above sea level and is a common acclimatisation stop. Severe snow at that altitude can restrict movement and complicate emergency access.

Nepal’s Tourism Board issued a warning on 29 October, advising visitors to postpone trips to high Himalayan areas and remain in safe locations because of the risk of snowstorms, avalanches and travel disruption. The weather was associated with Cyclone Arnab’s influence on Nepal.

The following report from the New York Post shows dramatic footage of the blaze. Some footage is credited to Storyful. The images are being embedded from the original publisher rather than re-uploaded by Fish 4 News.

What remains unconfirmed?

  • The definitive cause of the fire and whether a gas cylinder exploded.
  • The final number and extent of hotel buildings destroyed.
  • The financial cost of the damage and when the hotel might reopen.
  • When affected trekking groups were able to resume their journeys.

No casualties were reported by police in the accounts available at the time of writing. Further findings may be released as local officials assess the damage.
