Two women have been sentenced to probation in Las Vegas after admitting a conspiracy to steal from businessman Gavin Maloof, whose former girlfriend agreed to repay $444,648 taken through unauthorised money transfers.
Jennifer Courtemanche and Brittany Burgess each pleaded guilty in June 2026 to a gross misdemeanour count of conspiracy to commit theft. Clark County District Judge Bita Yeager sentenced both women on 20 October 2026 to one year’s probation, according to reports from the sentencing hearing.
What the court decided
Courtemanche, who formerly dated Maloof, agreed under her plea arrangement to pay him $444,648 in restitution. Burgess, described in the case as Courtemanche’s purported talent agent, agreed to repay almost $12,000. The figures are separate obligations in the plea agreements and should not be treated as an additional confirmed total stolen.
The judge required both women to maintain legitimate full-time employment to support restitution payments and scheduled a review of compliance for November. Their agreements provide a route for the cases to be dismissed if the required restitution is paid in full. There is no confirmed evidence in the reporting reviewed that full repayment has yet occurred.
The case originally involved more serious theft and money-laundering allegations. The eventual guilty pleas were to conspiracy to commit theft; the defendants were not sentenced on those original felony allegations. Local broadcaster 8 News Now separately reported that Courtemanche received credit for one day previously spent in custody against a suspended 12-month jail term, rather than a new immediate custodial sentence.
How police said the money was taken
The investigation began after Maloof reported a series of harassing text messages and photographs in February 2023. Police traced activity involving numerous internet-based telephone numbers and subsequently uncovered suspicious Apple Cash payments.
According to the police arrest report described by local station KTNV, Maloof sometimes allowed Courtemanche to use his phone when calls supposedly came from her talent agent. Investigators alleged that contact numbers and conversations were used to obtain access and send money without his consent.
- 214 Apple Cash transfers were attempted between 24 December 2020 and 13 April 2023.
- 184 of the attempted transfers were successful, totalling $444,648.
- The attempted transfers together were valued at $498,448, meaning the attempted total was higher than the amount investigators say was successfully transferred.
These transaction figures come from the police investigation as reported by KTNV. They describe a series of transfers across more than two years, not one payment of nearly half a million dollars.
Messages and the relationship
Investigators also pointed to messages between the women which, according to reports of the police records, discussed the prospect of Courtemanche’s relationship with Maloof and their financial ambitions. Those messages formed part of the investigation; claims about the women’s motives remain attributed to the police and Maloof rather than being presented as separate findings made by the court.
At sentencing, Maloof said the loss of trust had affected him beyond the financial damage. The Las Vegas Review-Journal reported that he delivered a victim impact statement before Judge Yeager. Neither defendant addressed the court at sentencing, according to that account.
Who is Gavin Maloof?
Maloof is a Las Vegas businessman with ties to the city’s hospitality and professional sports industries. The Maloof family previously owned the NBA’s Sacramento Kings and developed the Palms Casino Resort. He and members of his family were also involved in the founding of the NHL’s Vegas Golden Knights.
What happens next?
The key outstanding question is restitution. The court is due to review whether the women are complying with the employment and repayment terms in November 2026. Probation does not, on its own, establish that the money has been recovered, and any subsequent dismissal depends on the terms of the plea agreements being satisfied.
