CD Tenerife striker Jesús de Miguel has died aged 30 after a collision with FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono during a Spanish second-division match.

De Miguel suffered a cardiac arrest following the incident on Monday 2 November 2026 at the Heliodoro Rodríguez López stadium in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. He was taken to hospital but died at 8am local time (7am UK time) on Tuesday 3 November, his club confirmed.
What happened during the match?
The collision took place in added time, with Tenerife and Andorra level at 2-2. De Miguel was chasing a long ball near the halfway line when Owono ran out of his penalty area in an attempt to clear it. The goalkeeper’s raised leg struck the forward, leaving De Miguel on the ground as players called for medical assistance.
Owono was shown a straight red card. Medical teams treated De Miguel at the stadium and resuscitation efforts followed after he suffered a cardiorespiratory arrest. The match was abandoned.
The 30-year-old was admitted to the intensive care unit of the Hospital Universitario Nuestra Señora de Candelaria. Tenerife initially described his condition as stable but serious, before announcing a neurological deterioration overnight.
What Tenerife and Andorra have said
In its official statement, Tenerife said it was devastated by De Miguel’s death and offered support to his family, friends and supporters. His family thanked those who had sent messages of sympathy and asked for their privacy to be respected.
FC Andorra also issued a statement expressing condolences and said it remained in contact with Tenerife. The club confirmed it had asked for its next match against Mallorca to be postponed and was offering psychological support to those affected.
Why are police investigating?
Spain’s National Police opened an investigation into the circumstances of the death, with the matter placed under judicial supervision. The Canary Islands High Court explained that a judicial inquiry is standard when a death is not considered to have occurred from natural causes, including in accidents, according to Spanish news agency EFE.
The existence of an investigation does not mean Owono has committed a crime. Santa Cruz de Tenerife’s chief prosecutor, José Luis Sánchez-Jáuregui, told EFE that criminal proceedings would be difficult to bring over a collision occurring during play. Sporting disciplinary questions are separate from any criminal inquiry.
The precise medical cause of De Miguel’s death has not been publicly established, beyond the reported cardiac arrest and injuries sustained in the collision.
Football pays tribute
The Royal Spanish Football Federation postponed scheduled Copa del Rey and Copa de la Reina fixtures on 3, 4 and 5 November, extending an initial one-day suspension as a mark of respect. UEFA also announced moments of silence at European matches.
Supporters placed flowers, candles and messages outside Tenerife’s stadium. The club planned a tribute there on Saturday, according to EFE.
Who was Jesús de Miguel?
Born in Madrid on 21 September 1996, De Miguel came through Leganés’s youth and reserve teams and later played for Castellón before joining Tenerife in 2025. He was part of the club’s attack in Spain’s second tier.
Tenerife’s statement placed his family’s privacy at the centre of its message. The club and wider football community continue to mourn his death.
